Vague marketing labels like "plant-based," "biodegradable," and "sensitive" are unregulated in the consumer cleaning industry. We investigate actual chemical formulations, cross-reference every raw ingredient against world-class toxicology databases, and rank what actually works in hard water.
Every laundry product is chemically checked against the EWG Skin Deep database and the EU Detergent Regulation before we write a word.

Sproose is an independent review publication covering eco laundry sheets, non-toxic detergents, and chemical-free home cleaners for the Irish and UK market. We were started out of frustration with eco product marketing that makes sweeping safety claims without a single ingredient-level fact to support them.
Every product we review is chemically audited against two independent standards: the EWG Skin Deep database, which rates individual ingredients from A to F based on peer-reviewed toxicology, and the EU Detergent Regulation ingredient disclosure requirements. We check actual formulations — not packaging language, not brand press releases.
We also test in real Irish conditions. Dublin and Leinster hard water runs at 340–380 mg/L calcium carbonate. Most eco laundry products are developed for soft-water markets and underperform here without adjustment. Our guides account for this and tell you exactly what to do about it.
The questions Irish shoppers ask most often about eco laundry products, ingredient safety, and hard water.
Eco laundry sheets work well when matched to your water hardness. In soft water they clean comparably to standard liquid detergents. In hard water areas like Dublin and Leinster, adding a tablespoon of washing soda per load significantly improves performance. The best-performing sheets — Earth Breeze Fragrance Free and Tru Earth Hypoallergenic — both rate EWG A across all ingredients. See our laundry sheets guide for the full breakdown.
For Irish buyers, Bio-D Laundry Liquid (Ecocert certified, available in health stores nationwide) and Earth Breeze Fragrance Free sheets are the highest-rated options on both environmental and ingredient safety grounds. Both are free from optical brighteners, synthetic fragrance, and isothiazolinone preservatives, and carry independent third-party certifications. See our non-toxic detergent guide for rated alternatives.
Most eco laundry sheets underperform in Irish hard water — particularly in Dublin and Leinster where hardness runs at 340–380 mg/L. The fix: add one tablespoon of washing soda (Soda Crystals, around €2–3/kg in all major Irish supermarkets) to the drum per wash. This sequesters the calcium and magnesium ions that reduce surfactant efficiency. Our hard water guide covers this in full.
Not all sheets are safe for eczema-prone skin. The key criteria: fragrance-free, free from optical brighteners, and free from isothiazolinone preservatives (MIT, BIT). Earth Breeze Fragrance Free and Tru Earth Hypoallergenic both pass all three and rate EWG A. Smol Sensitive contains benzisothiazolinone (BIT, EWG C) and is not our first recommendation for eczema. Full details in our eczema detergent guide.
Earth Breeze is available through Amazon Ireland and specialist Irish online eco retailers. Ecover Laundry Liquid is stocked by Dunnes Stores and SuperValu nationwide. Bio-D is in Holland & Barrett and Nourish Health Stores. Soda Crystals are in Dunnes, Tesco, and SuperValu cleaning aisles. See our where to buy guide for a full stockist list.
"Non-toxic" is an unregulated marketing term in Ireland and the EU — any brand can use it without meeting a defined standard. The most reliable independent benchmark is the EWG Skin Deep database, which rates individual ingredients from A to F based on peer-reviewed toxicology. We only recommend detergents where every ingredient rates A or B on EWG. Read more in our non-toxic detergent guide.
